Offered here for sale as part of the small chair range by The Sitting Place® is an aesthetic period side chair in walnut and dated around 1880-1884. The design of this chair is attributed to the well known British Architect Robert William Edis (1839-1927), who at the time advocated the use of hygienic and practical furniture. Indeed a similar, though simpler model, designed by Edis, and created by London cabinet-makers Jackson & Graham, was exhibited as an Edis inspired bedroom at the Health Exhibition in 1884 and as seen illustrated in Building News 1884. That simpler model was also shown in the illustration "A drawing room corner" in Edis' book "Decoration and Furnishing of Town Houses" (1881). The chair offered here has the characteristic sweeping side supports, incised tramline detailing on the bar back and beautiful crisp ring turning on the spindles, the stretchers of the seat as well as on the forelegs. The seat of this chair has been fully traditionally re-upholstered by The Sitting Place® and then finished in Daffodil fabric (cove blue and chocolate colour scheme) by Morris & co. The fabric complements the period of the chair noting that Edis was a strong proponent of Morris and co designs. The chair is quite small - see comparison with a dining chair on the post on small chairs on our Instagram page @thesittingplace. Due to the fragile construction of the chair, it would only suit light weight bearing as a decorative chair. Note that colours on screen may differ slightly from the actual colours.

Condition: Good original condition with minor wear though there is evidence of some visible repair work e.g. a section on the side of the back rail has been filled, while a small surface crack on side of the seat has been filled before upholstering. More photos of these repairs may be provided upon request. The seat frame has been re-glued and is solid.
